Do I always have to know where my child is? (Jugendamt)

Yes, it is very important that you always know where your child is.

In Germany, parents have Aufsichtspflicht (supervisory duty) of their children. It means that leaving a child alone, especially small ones, is not allowed. Please always make sure that there is an adult who takes care of your child.

Jugendamt (Youth Welfare Office) is an organisation that pays attention on the wellbeing of children. If children are in danger, the Jungendamt steps in and tries to help parents for the child’s health and safety. If parents did not take care of the wellbeing of the child, it could lead to a removal of parental rights.

Please note: If you feel overwhelmed with parenting, you can contact the Jugendamt by your own to get support.
